A split is the point where one timeline splits off into two or more timelines. Both timelines then exist sharing a common past but divergent futures. Distance in time from a split point is one factor in the amount of temporal divergence between the divergent timelines (the extent of the differences between the two timelines).
Splits occur at PODs (points-of-divergence). Alternate descendent timelines are dependent on a split. In your life you can probably trace back certain split events that caused you to change directions from a path you were previously heading down to a new path. This new path would be on a descendent timeline from that split event.
